DANVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — The faculty union of Danville Area Community College is speaking out after Danville Mayor Rickey Williams accused the college’s president of “aggressively disrespectful” behavior and use of a racially insensitive word toward him.

Williams accused Dr. Stephen Nacco last week of calling him “boy” during a heated exchange at a Vermilion Advantage Executive Committee meeting. Williams, in an open letter to DACC’s Board of Trustees, explained that this word was often used as racial slur.

Following Williams’ allegations, the Board of Trustees confirmed that an investigation had been opened into Nacco’s behavior. On Monday, DACC’s Faculty Union Association provided WCIA with the following statement:

In light of recent public allegations involving members of the Danville Area Community College, The Faculty Association Union of Danville Area Community College wishes to make a clear and unequivocal statement regarding our stance on the matter.

The faculty of Danville Area Community College does not condone any form of racial slurs, attacks, or discriminatory behavior. We stand in solidarity with all members of our community who may be affected by such actions, and we reaffirm our unwavering commitment to the values that guide our institution.

As educators and leaders in the community, we hold ourselves and our colleagues to the highest standards of respect, integrity and inclusivity. The language and actions described in the recent allegations are in direct conflict with the core values that Danville Area Community College upholds, particularly our commitment to “providing a safe and secure learning environment for the personal and intellectual growth of those we serve” as well as “promoting and upholding our vision that all are treated with equality, fairness, dignity, and respect.”

As this investigation progresses, we urge transparency, accountability and a commitment to justice. The Faculty Union will continue to advocate for a campus environment that reflects the best of our shared values and ensures a safe, supportive, and inclusive experience for all.

In order to protect the integrity of the investigation, further comment from the union will be withheld until the Board of Trustees concludes their investigation into the matter. We appreciate the ongoing support of our students, faculty, staff and the broader community as we navigate this difficult time.

Statement signed by Kathy Hunter, Union President, and Marla Jarmer, Union Vice President

The statement was signed on behalf of a voted majority of the DACC Faculty Union.
