SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — The Illinois Department of Public Health is reporting their first death this year from the West Nile Virus.

The individual, who lived in Lake County, was in their 80’s. The person had symptoms in mid-August and died not long after.

“Sadly, Illinois is reporting our first death of the year attributed to West Nile virus,” said IDPH Director Dr. Sameer Vohra. “This death and the six that occurred last year in Illinois – are a stark reminder that West Nile virus poses a serious risk, especially to older people and those with weakened immune systems.”

So far, the state has reported nine other human cases in Cook, DuPage, Will, Winnebago and Tazewell counties.

IDPH said prevention of mosquito bites is key, as there is no treatment or vaccine for WNV.

“This is why while warm weather continues and mosquitoes are breeding, we should all take steps to Fight the Bite,” Vohra said. “Please protect yourself and your loved ones by reducing exposures, repelling insects with clothing and repellents, and reporting locations at high risk for producing mosquitoes.”

Last year, West Nile Virus caused six deaths in Illinois. Health officials were able to report at least 119 cases of the virus where people recovered.

Four out of five people who contract West Nile Virus do not have symptoms, but in some cases cases the virus can cause brain infections, paralysis and death. Severe illness from WNV is more common for the elderly.
