SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — Springfield Police are investigating after an altercation in a parking lot led to a vehicle driving through a group of people overnight, leaving one of them hospitalized.

Around 12:39 a.m., officers responded to the area of 5th Street and North Grand Avenue after it was reported that a vehicle hit several people. When officers arrived, it was advised that a gold Lexus drove over a curb in the 1100 block of North 5th Street, damaging one of tires. The vehicle then drove into the parking lot of the Qik-n-Ez at 430 N. Grand Avenue.

Witnesses told police the driver and two people in the parking lot engaged in an altercation. The driver then got back into the vehicle and drove through a group of people on the sidewalk east of the Qik-n-Ez parking lot, injuring some of them.

One female had her legs ran over as she was sitting down on the sidewalk when the vehicle drove through. An ambulance took her to the Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Another person on the sidewalk said his feet were ran over, but he refused treatment.

Police said several other witnesses left the scene in attempt to find the vehicle after it left the area, heading north on 6th Street.

Shortly after, an officer found the vehicle near the intersection of 6th Street and Keys Avenue. Police found an ID in the vehicle, which they believe belongs to the driver, before towing the vehicle from the scene.

As Springfield Police continue to investigate, there is no further information available at this time.

They ask that anyone with information related to the incident calls Crime Stoppers at 217-788-8427 or submits an anonymous tip online.
