HUME, Ill. (WCIA) — The Shiloh Community Unit School District is mourning the loss of one of its students following what they called a “tragic accident.”

Superintendent Morgan Wilhoit told WCIA that the student, a high school freshman, suddenly passed away. She called the death “a significant loss in our schools and our community.”

“Our district is committed to doing everything we can to help our students with the grieving and healing process. To that end, we have activated our crisis counseling team to be at our schools today,” Wilhoit said to parents and guardians on Facebook . “This loss will affect everyone in our school family and the Shiloh Community. Students may have difficulty dealing with the loss, and we encourage you to talk with your child.”

To help students, grief counselors will be available at the school until 7 p.m. on Tuesday as well as on Wednesday.

Because of this sudden tragedy, all junior high and high school sports have been canceled for Tuesday evening. Tuesday’s Board of Education Meeting has also been canceled and will be rescheduled.

The school district has planned a memorial vigil for 6 p.m. on Tuesday in the school’s parking lot. All students and community members are invited to attend.
