SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — The Springfield YMCA has renamed their gym in honor of a longtime public servant in the City of Springfield.

The YMCA honored Doris Turner (D-Springfield) this week with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the new Doris Turner Gymnasium. They said they wanted to recognize her support for the organization, which included securing the funds to build the downtown YMCA back in 2020.

U.S. Senator Dick Durbin was on hand for the dedication.

“She’s a leader in this community,” Durbin said. “I have seen her public events and private events draw this community together like no one else can. I’m glad she’s been honored by the YMCA.”

Turner worked for the State of Illinois for 33 years. She previously served on the Springfield City Council and the Sangamon County Board. Since 2021, she has represented Springfield in the Illinois State Senate.
