DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — The Ohio Department of Agriculture will be working to get an invasive species under control in two local counties.

Aerial treatments to help control the population of the moths in Auglaize and Logan counties are expected to begin in June. To administer the treatment, crews will be utilizing a “low-flying aircraft,” which will fly around 100 feet above the treetops.

The invasive species can destroy 300 species of shrubbery and trees. Healthy trees can ultimately defoliate from the insect after just two years.

7 area high schools rank in Ohio’s top 50: report

In both counties, the treatment will be one application of a product called SPLAT GM-O.

“This product does not kill the moth, but it disrupts the mating process by confusing the male as it searches for a female mate,” said the ODA. “SPLAT is an organic and biodegradable formula that is completely harmless to both humans and animals.”

Nearby residents that believe they have come into contact with SPLAT GM-O should wash what came into contact with the treatment. Detergent and hot water are suggested for washing clothes.
