BLACKFORD COUNTY, Ind. — A Hartford City woman was arrested and charged after a traffic stop uncovered her reportedly bringing fentanyl to Indiana from the Dayton area.

According to court documents, filed earlier this month in Blackford County, 25-year-old Sydney Hendricks has been charged with:

    • One count of dealing in a narcotic drug, manufacture/deliver/finance 10 or more grams, a Level 2 felony
    • One count of possession of a narcotic drug between 10 and 28 grams, a Level 4 felony
    • One misdemeanor paraphernalia charge.

On July 30, a deputy with the Blackford County Sheriff’s Office was monitoring Hendricks, who was reportedly purchasing drugs in Trotwood, Ohio, and bringing them back to Blackford County. Hendricks reportedly told officers in the past that she “often makes trips to Dayton to purchase fentanyl.”

At around 3:50 p.m. on July 30, deputies conducted a traffic stop on Hendricks’ vehicle on a speeding violation. During the stop, Hendricks reportedly told the deputy that she was traveling from Terre Haute.

According to the court documents, a Hartford City police officer and a K9 partner conducted an open-air sniff of the vehicle and the K9 indicated the presence of illegal narcotics inside the vehicle.

During the traffic stop, Hendricks reportedly told officers that there may have been a “straw” in her vehicle, a device used to ingest narcotics. In the vehicle, officers located a partial cut straw containing an off-white powder residue as well as a wrapper containing powder residue.

After Hendricks reportedly told officers multiple times that she was traveling from Terre Haute, she eventually told officers that she was coming from Ohio.

“Hendricks stated that she was getting a medical procedure done, but could not ‘find’ anything because she didn’t have any money,” the court documents said. “(The deputy) asked Hendricks what she was trying to find, she stated fentanyl.”

As Hendricks was being transported to the Blackford County Security Center, she reportedly told the deputy that she had some drugs hidden in her bra. During a search, four bags containing an off-white powder substance , as well as an additional cut straw containing residue, were found on Hendricks’ person. The documents said that the bags weighed a combined 20.9 grams.

In an interview with Hendricks, she said her husband had told her to go to Ohio to purchase the fentanyl for him, telling deputies that she was going to take it to him.

Hendricks’ initial hearing occurred on Wednesday morning in Blackford County Court. A pretrial conference is scheduled for March 3, 2025 and a jury trial is scheduled for March 18, 2025.
