GREENVILLE, Ohio ( WDTN ) — Greenville mayor’s proposed total ban on marijuana businesses is getting pushback from some city council members.

Last December, Greenville city council members voted to place a temporary ban on adult-use cannabis operations. However, Mayor Jeff Whitaker wants to make the ban permanent, saying it’s a contradiction of the anti-drug message promoted at school.

Some city council members do not agree.

According to our partners at the Daily Advocate, councilman Greg White drew a comparison to education on alcohol use.

White also asked if the city would be better off with regulations to move forward or with an outright ban on dispensaries. Greenville does have regulations for medical marijuana dispensaries, but not for recreational.

Though Issue 2 passed statewide, Whitaker pointed out that 52.88% of voters in Greenville and 62.3% in Darke County voted no on Issue 2 .

“I believe the citizens locally in Greenville and Darke County have already spoken clearly on this issue in the last election,” said Whitaker.

The council voted to send the mayor’s proposed ban to a committee for further consideration.
