Troy Schools schedules early dismissals due to heat, responds to call for Labor Day start

TROY, Ohio (WDTN) — Students in the Troy City School District will be going home a bit sooner a few days this week due to expected heat. And don’t look for the district to push back the start date for its year.

Troy City Schools has announced the district will dismiss all students two hours early on Tuesday, Aug. 27, and Wednesday, Aug. 28.

In its announcement, the district cited dangerous heat forecasted by the National Weather Service in Wilmington. In a Hazardous Weather Outlook issued Monday morning , the weather service said heat indices could approach 100 degrees both days.

District students who attend Upper Valley Career Center will also be impacted. According to Troy Schools, UVCC students who are also Troy students will be transported from UVCC to Troy High School two hours early.

In a later social media post Monday , the district responded to calls to change its academic calendar so that the year doesn’t begin until after Labor Day (which falls on Sept. 2 this year), under the misconception that it would make heat less of an issue.

Since 2019, we have had to dismiss early eight times prior to tomorrow and Wednesday. Four of those early dismissals were prior to Labor Day that year. Four of those early dismissals were after Labor Day. This includes 2021, when we dismissed early Oct. 19 because of heat!

Unfortunately, starting school after Labor Day isn’t a cure-all, but we absolutely understand everyone’s thought process.

The district ended its follow-up post by pointing out that thanks to Troy voters passing a levy in November 2023 , all of its buildings will be air conditioned when the school year opens in 2027.
