WEATHERLY, CARBON COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — On Tuesday, close to $900,000 was awarded to our area to build affordable housing in Schuylkill and Carbon Counties.

Local lawmakers gathered at Schwab School in Weatherly to give away thousands of dollars in PennHomes funds from the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency.

The new project at the school would cost around $11,300,000 to build apartments for low-income families.

The rest of the project is being funded by private investment and donations.

The project includes the construction of 30 affordable housing units.

“This one building really is kind of the center of the community here, but this one here is gonna take a little more,” said 122nd District State Representative Doyle Heffley.

The outside of the building will also be updated while also preserving the building’s unique character.
