Investigation into self-defense incident near Webb City

JOPLIN, Mo. (KOAM) - On Wednesday, June 19, Jasper County deputies responded to Sunrise Lane near Webb City following a report of a male, identified as Denis Sanchez-Cortez, 33, from Joplin, sustaining a gunshot wound.

According to authorities, Sanchez-Cortez was transported to a local hospital for a single non-life-threatening injury and later transferred to Springfield for further treatment.

Sheriff Randee Kaiser indicated that initial investigations point to the incident being an act of self-defense. The shooter has been identified and is cooperating with authorities.

"While the investigation continues, there is no current danger to the public as this appears to be an isolated incident," assured Sheriff Kaiser.
