Villager escapes prosecution in shoplifting case at Walmart
A Villager has escaped prosecution in a shoplifting case after successfully completing an anti-theft course. Karon Rae Stockman, 68, of the Village of St. James, will not face prosecution on the theft charge, according to an announcement of no information earlier this month in Sumter County Court. Stockman had been allowed to enter into a pre-trial intervention contract which required her to complete a four-hour anti-theft course and to complete a weekend of work detail in Sumter County.

A speeding PepperTree Apartments man was jailed after a traffic stop on County Road 466. Trey Anthony Shell, 21, who lives in the apartment complex in Wildwood, was driving a red Kia Optima at about 6:30 p.m. Thursday on County Road 466 at County Road 229 when he was caught on radar traveling at 75 miles per hour in a 55 mph zone, according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.
Hernando County Crime Stoppers offers reward for information on fugitive
BROOKSVILLE, Florida — Hernando County Crime Stoppers is offering a cash reward for information leading to the location and arrest of a fugitive. Travis Jeffrey Cummings, a 33-year-old from Brooksville, Florida, is wanted for failure to appear in court on multiple charges, including possession of cocaine, driving with a suspended license (second offense), possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana (less than 20 grams), and no motor vehicle registration. There is no bond for any of the charges, according to a press release from Hernando County Crime Stoppers.

A Clermont man on a stolen motorcycle was arrested for drug possession after allegedly trying to hide meth from deputies while using the restroom. Deputies were conducting surveillance at 7445 State Road 33 in Clermont when they saw a man on a motorcycle matching the description of 55-year-old Richard Steven French, who had a felony warrant, allegedly residing at the residence.

Deputies arrest convicted felon in Lexus with stun gun
Sumter County sheriff’s deputies arrested a convicted felon with a stun gun tucked in the door pocket of a Lexus. Tristan Michael Douglas Berry, 29, of Leesburg, was driving the white Lexus ES shortly before 2 p.m. Thursday in Center Hill when a deputy ran the license plate and discovered it had been assigned to another vehicle, according to an arrest report. During a traffic stop, Berry admitted the vehicle wasn’t properly registered and claimed it had recently been “purchased by his friend.”

Irate man arrested after discovering hickey on teen’s neck
An irate man was arrested on a child abuse charge after discovering a hickey on a teen’s neck. Melvin Comer, 48, of Bushnell, was arrested Wednesday by Sumter County sheriff’s deputies. Comer learned that the 14-year-old had received a hickey from her boyfriend and Comer went to a residence in Webster to confront her, planning to take her phone away, according to an arrest report. When he arrived, he “started yelling at her and demanding she give him her phone,” the report said.
