EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) – This Sunday the quest for the Mayor’s Cup is played in a third annual Evansville derby.

Just two short years ago, the University of Southern Indiana became a Division I institution which meant each time they competed against the University of Evansville moving forward would no longer be considered an exhibition. Thus, the Mayor’s Cup was born.

In 2022, both teams played to a 0-0 draw. The following year, the Aces put their foot on the gas and never let up grabbing a 4-0 victory. But a new year brings new opportunity as both teams are eager for kickoff in 2024.

“We are so excited to come back to the McCutchen to play against USI in front of our [fans],” said MVC offensive player of the week Nacho Diaz Barragan. “It’s for sure going to be a competitive game. We are prepared. If we [play] our best football, our best soccer, it’s going to be a good game for us.”

“I think any time you have an inner-city game with two teams that want to win it’s circled on your calendar,” said Aces head coach Robbe Tarver. “I know USI has it circled on theirs. I think it’s just an awesome game for everybody in Evansville to see the highest level of soccer that you can in this community and, you know, we definitely want to win that game.”

So far this season, Southern Indiana is 0-2 with a chance to grab its first win against Green Bay on Thursday. USI is also seeking their first win in the Mayor’s Cup meaning Sunday’s game carries a lot of weight.

“We get a good crowd for it,” said Screaming Eagles head coach Mat Santoro. “There is hardware on the line, you know, the Mayor’s Cup. I understand in the world of college sports we look to the end of the season and postseason tournament and all of that, but there’s something to play for.”

The Aces will be sporting throwback jerseys to honor the 1994 team as well as to celebrate the program’s 50th anniversary. Kickoff between Southern Indiana and Evansville will be at 7:00 p.m. CT at Arad McCutchen Stadium.
