Community members in Powell County could have their access to food affected after a fire broke out at the Clay City IGA grocery store.

The fire happened around 3 p.m. Tuesday. No injuries have been reported, but smoke damage destroyed all the food inside.

The town’s Volunteer Fire Department says they’re unsure how it started, but they have a fire marshall coming to investigate.

Clay City firefighter Lisa Johnson says it will have a big effect on the small community.

“For people that are used to going to IGA every day, they think, ‘If all of a sudden I need something, I'm three blocks away.’ So that's going to affect a lot of people, because there's a lot of walkers that walk to the store,” Johnson said.

There’s currently no timetable on when the store will reopen.
