Northern Lights YMCA exploring options to move pool
ESCANABA — The Northern Lights YMCA in Escanaba is expected to move the location of its pool in 2026. Back in 2021, the YMCA was relocated to the former M-TEC facility on the Bay College Campus, a move made possible through a contribution from the Hannahville Indian Community. The only problem was that the pool did not relocate with the rest of the YMCA’s equipment.

Escanaba DDA hosts Patriotic Polka Party in the Park
ESCANABA, Mich. (WLUC) - Escanaba celebrated the Fourth of July with a polka party Friday. The city’s Downtown Development Authority (DDA) invited The Mix from Pulaski, Wisconsin to Ludington Park for the Patriotic Polka Party in the Park. Other than live polka music, participants could enjoy dancing, food and refreshments.
Rookie wins men’s log rolling competition in Gladstone
GLADSTONE, Mich. (WLUC) - Professional log rollers competed at the 8th Annual U.S. Open competition in the lagoon at Van Cleeve Park in Gladstone on the Fourth of July. 17-year-old rookie Marcus Heineck started log rolling when he was 8 years old. He took first place in the men’s competition.
Woman dies, 3 children rescued from water near U.P. campground

RAPID RIVER — Alan L. Branstrom, age 73, of Rapid River, passed away on June 30, 2024, at St. Vincent Hospital in Green Bay, Wis. Al was born on June 21, 1951, in Escanaba, the son of Arthur “Dick” and Erma (Demeuse) Branstrom. They relocated to Taylor, Mich. when Al was young, and he later graduated from Taylor High School. Following graduation, Al moved back to the Upper Peninsula to further his carpentry career. Al worked in carpentry for most of his life, most recently being employed with 41 Lumber in Escanaba. Al was united in marriage to the former Lynn LaPointe, and they shared 44 wonderful years together. Al enjoyed riding motorcycles, fishing trips, boat rides on Little Bay de Noc, the Green Bay Packers, and spending time with his family.

GLADSTONE — Calvin Joseph Bovin, age 81, of Gladstone passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side on Wednesday, July 3, 2024. Cal was born December 15, 1942 in Escanaba, the son of Carl and Ruth (Hillman) Bovin. He was raised in Gladstone and graduated from the Gladstone High School. He was united in marriage to Terry Maki on June 19, 1965 at All Saints Catholic Church. He managed the Action Paper in Escanaba, volunteered at the Gladstone Senior Center and enjoyed going to the casino and golfing with his son-in-law, Donald and good friends, Pat and Bob at the Irish Oaks and Namha Golf Courses.
Gladstone pickleball project taking shape
GLADSTONE — A few more pieces are still waiting to be assembled, but the new home of Gladstone Area Pickleball should be ready for play before the end of the year at the John and Melissa Besse Sports Park. To those temporarily playing on their shared-use courts in downtown Gladstone, it probably seems like completion can’t come soon enough, but this project has moved at an unusually fast pace — driven by the enthusiasm and numbers of pickleball players in Delta County and beyond.
Victorson installed as Elks District Deputy for Upper Peninsula
AUSTIN, Texas — Thousands of members of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the United States of America and guests have gathered in Austin, Texas, from June 30 to July 3 for the BPO Elks National Convention. During the convention, Steven D. Victorson, of Bark River, was installed as District Deputy for the BPO Elks for lodges in the Upper Peninsula District of the Michigan Elks Association. He will serve a one-year term.
