Three writers inducted into Upper Peninsula Literary Hall of Fame
ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – On Thursday, three authors were inducted into the Upper Peninsula Literary Hall of Fame. The Escanaba Public Library hosted a ceremony to honor inductees Tom Bissell, Elinor Benedict, and Gloria Whelan. Bissell attended to read some of his own writing, while guest presenters read works from Benedict and Whelan.
OSF Hospital and Bellin Health partner to open cardiac catheterization lab
ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – A new laboratory at Escanaba’s OSF St. Francis Hospital is helping patients get life-saving care close to home. OSF has opened a cardiac catheterization lab in partnership with Bellin Health’s cardiovascular team. The lab offers high-end care that includes pacemaker placement, defibrillators, loop recorders, and diagnostic angiograms.
Friendly ghost walk brings Delta County’s past alive
ESCANABA — A guided historical walk through a local cemetery kicked off this week and continues this weekend. Playing Dead: A Cemetery Walk with Players de Noc is back in Escanaba at the Lakeview Cemetery. Written by local writers, Andrew Jones, Katherine LeDuc, and Lori Rose, this is a great chance to enjoy some local history as told by the folks who made it. The group already has one slate of shows under their belts and they will be back in action on July 19 and 20. Tours start at 7 p.m. and depart every 10 minutes, the last tour leaves at 8:30 p.m. Tickets are available for purchase online at playersdenoc.org, the William Bonifas Fine Arts Center or at the Lakeview Cemetery entrance starting 15 minutes before the first tour.

ESCANABA — Roy Allen Cartwright, age 87, of Escanaba passed away Tuesday July 16, 2024 at his home in Escanaba. He was born November 11, 1936 in Escanaba, and was the son of LeRoy and Ebba (Edmark) Cartwright. Roy graduated from Escanaba High School in 1955 and then served in the Michigan National Guard Reserves. He married Marilyn Long and together they raised their four children Mark, Connie, Kimber, and Tom. Roy later married Roxanne Monson. He started his working career with the railroad, later working for Harnischfeger Corporation before starting his 54 years with the Plumbers and Pipe Fitters Local 111. Roy enjoyed going to his camp at Stevens Lake and wintering in Texas with his camper. He loved fishing, hunting, going to the casino and was an avid Detroit Lions and Detroit Tigers fan. Roy loved people and was a very social person.

Michigan DNR seeks volunteers for U.P. State Fair experiences
What's happening: One of the biggest annual events in the Upper Peninsula is looking for a helping hand, specifically when it comes to connecting youth with The Great Outdoors. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is requesting volunteers to help with the Pocket Park at the U.P. State Fair, which runs from August 12-18 in Escanaba. Specifically, volunteers will help kids learn various outdoor skills like catch-and-release fishing, learn how to shoot pellet guns or archery, staffing the fire tower and greeting people coming to the Fair.
31-year-old overturns vehicle into ditch; says he was forced off the roadway by another vehicle
On Monday, July 15, at 6:21 A.M., deputies from the Mecosta County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to an accident at US-131 and 12 Mile Road. The investigation found a 31-year-old-male from Wilson, Michigan went down into the ditch and overturned his vehicle. The driver stated he was ran off the roadway by another vehicle, but that vehicle left without stopping. He was transported by Mecosta County EMS to Corwell Health Big Rapids Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
