Escanaba “Walk in the Park” celebrates 20 years of raising awareness and money for brain tumor research
ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – On October 19, 2004, the lives of four sisters—Anne Erickson, Mary McInnis, Sue McInnis, and Amy Norkus—changed forever. “Our dad [Don McInnis] passed away after a battle with a glioblastoma brain tumor,” Anne said. “We kind of felt like there was an emptiness—an emptiness even beyond the emptiness of missing him. I felt kind of helpless, and I wanted to do something.”
Kids build mink boxes at ‘Kids Cave’ at trapping show in Escanaba
ESCANABA, Mich. (WLUC) - The U.P. Trappers Convention and Outdoor Show at the UP State Fairgrounds in Escanaba has a new spot for kids that’s filled with activities. It’s called the ‘Kids Cave.’ Youth can build mink boxes, bandage a stuffed animal and pan for gold. They can also fish in the pond at the DNR Pocket Park.

Trappers converge on Escanaba for Outdoors Expo
ESCANABA –The Annual Trapper’s Convention/Outdoor Expo kicked off Friday and is continues today at the U.P. State Fairgrounds from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $10 for both days and kids under 12 are admitted free. Food and drinks will be available for purchase and camping on the grounds is also available. New to the event this year is “The Kids Cave” which will offer activities including: “Bandage a Bear,” “Pan for Gold”, “Build a Mink Box”, “Trapping Demos”, supervised free fishing, archery and others. Games, prizes, and raffles are scheduled.
Exploring new worlds
Children learn how to use microscopes at Escanaba’s city hall this week, viewing slides and drawing what they see. The activity was brought to town by the Escanaba Public Library and conducted by the Michigan Science Center, which is located in Detroit but holds demonstrations around Michigan, Ohio and Indiana as well as remotely over Zoom.

GLADSTONE — Paul B. Hammond, age 85, of Gladstone, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Wednesday, July 10, 2024 at his home. Paul was born on June 11, 1939, in Escanaba, the son of Richard and Ruth (Snyder) Hammond. He was raised in Gladstone and was a graduate of Gladstone High School. He went on to receive his teaching degree from Northern Michigan University. Paul was employed with the Escanaba Area Public Schools for 33 years. On June 15, 1968, Paul was united to the former Judy Martin and together they shared 56 wonderful years.
Tina Marie (Seger) Tosten
GLADSTONE — Tina Marie (Seger) Tosten, age 57, former Gladstone resident passed away Sunday, July 7, 2024 from injuries sustained in a side-by-side accident near Nahma, Mich. Tina was born July 16, 1966 in Escanaba, Mich. and was the daughter of James and Beatrice (Vanderlinden) Seger. She was raised in Gladstone and graduated from Gladstone High School in 1984. Following her graduation, Tina’s life took a courageous turn as she enlisted in the U.S. Army. Tina served for 27 years with the U.S. Army, serving in Korea, Germany and the United States. Driven by her passion for learning, Tina pursued higher education while in the reserves and successfully earned a bachelor of science in business administration. After her retirement from the United States Army, she was employed by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) in Nashville, Tenn. as an administrative assistant for nine years.
Anderson elected to Board of Michigan Funeral Directors Association
LANSING — Keith Anderson of Anderson Funeral Homes, located in Escanaba and Gladstone, was recently elected District #5 director of the Michigan Funeral Directors Association (MFDA). The MFDA is a professional organization representing roughly 1,100 funeral directors serving 500 funeral homes statewide and over three-quarters of all mortuary science licensees in Michigan.

GLADSTONE — Ben Johnson has been running a full marathon each month for well more than a year. The Minneapolis resident proved no worse for wear here Saturday as he won the MISH Waterfront Marathon by covering the 26.2 mile course in 2:46:29.06 on this sunny, very warm and humid day.

Escanaba awarded $19M for sewer system upgrades
LANSING, Mich. (WZMQ) – The City of Escanaba is getting nearly $19 million to improve its sanitary and storm sewer system. The Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy announced Friday the city is one of eight communities around the state to receive a portion of $27.1 million in state grants to protect public health and water resources.
62nd U.P. Trappers Convention & Outdoor Expo continues July 13 at U.P. State Fairgrounds
ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – On Friday, the 62nd Annual U.P. Trappers Convention & Outdoor Expo began at the U.P. State Fairgrounds. Hundreds of vendors are on site selling everything from fishing gear and animal traps to clothing and artwork. “The Kids Cave” is a new area where children can “pan for gold,” build a mink box, and try activities like fishing and archery.
Volunteers needed at DNR Pocket Park next month
ESCANABA, MI— The Department of Natural Resources is looking for people to mentor youth at the U.P. State Fair. Volunteers are needed to help staff the DNR’s Pocket Park August 12-18. They can help kids catch and release bluegills in the U.P.-shaped pond, shoot pellet guns or bows and arrows, staff the fire tower, or greet visitors.
