MISH Events seeks volunteers for Waterfront Marathon, Half Marathon, and 10K races
GLADSTONE, Mich. (WLUC) - The MISH Waterfront Marathon, Half Marathon, and 10K races are coming to Gladstone this weekend. Racers will run along Little Bay de Noc and through VanCleve Park, taking in Lake Michigan’s beautiful shoreline along the way. The course is USATF certified, which means runners can qualify for the Boston Marathon at the race.

WELLS — Sylvia J. Johnson, age 81, of Wells, Mich. passed away Sunday, July 7, 2024, surrounded by her loving family at her home in Wells. She was born January 25, 1943 in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia and was the daughter of Clarence and Nettie (Michael) Hewett. Sylvia graduated from Berkeley Springs High School with the class of 1964. On April 29, 1966 the former Sylvia J. Hewett married James H. Johnson at Bolling Air Force Base in Washington, D.C.

ESCANABA — It was a great night for Finn Bower on Saturday night as the nine year-old racer picked up his third feature win of the season at Escanaba Speedway. Bower started in last place of the four-car field, but that did not stop him from finding victory lane.
Vernie A. Wadeen
GLADSTONE — Vernie A. Wadeen, age 94 of Gladstone, passed away Saturday, June 15, 2024. Vern was born February 15, 1930 in Rock, son of the late Arthur and Vivian (Warmanen) Wadeen. In 1949 he graduated from Rock High School. He served in the United States Army from May of 1951 until his Honorable Discharge in May 1953 reaching the rank of corporal. He married the love of his life, the former Dorothy (Sis) Berry on April 25, 1953 in Marquette, Mich. She preceded him in death on October 9, 2016. The couple raised six children: Edward (Tammi) Wadeen, Kansas; Robert Wadeen, Escanaba; Sherry (Rick) Madsen, Green Bay, Wis.; Steve (Bea Lusardi) Wadeen, Lower Michigan; Kevin (January) Wadeen, Missouri.

Croatian Golf Open
A total of 69 golfers took part in the 53rd annual Croatian Open that was held at the Escanaba Country Club. The Jiggs Schomin Memorial Trophy was awarded to Kevin Mylander with a score of 36. Afterwards a meal was served to golfers and guests that included Croatian chicken and pork prepared by Ivan Malnar and Paul Pinar, sauerkraut prepared by Mike Meyer, and the traditional povitica made by Diane Micheau and Chris Rogers.

ESCANABA — Melodie A. Rodgers, age 59, of Escanaba passed away Sunday, July 7, 2024 at her home in Escanaba. Visitation will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. Monday, July 15, at New Life Church in Escanaba. Funeral services celebrating the life of Melodie Rodgers will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at New Life Church. A luncheon will be served following the funeral services. In lieu of flowers memorials can be directed to the family to help with funeral expenses. The Anderson Funeral Homes of Escanaba and Gladstone are assisting the Rodgers family with the arrangements and online condolences can be sent to the family at www.andersonfuneralhomes.net.
