A probable cause affidavit stated that at 5 p.m. on June 23, a Weslaco police officer responded to the Walmart at 1310 N. Texas Blvd in reference to a suspicious woman. While responding, the officer was told the woman had attempted to take a child away from their father.

When the officer arrived, she saw a child that appeared to be scared and crying. The officer spoke with the child’s father, who said he was shopping with the child who was 10 feet away from him, when he noticed the child came running back scared and crying, the document stated.

The child told him that a woman nearby tried to take them away. According to the affidavit, the woman was making hand gestures and said, “come here baby.”

Another officer located the woman, identified as Lopez, still walking around the store. The officer noted that Lopez was making statements that did not make sense, and at one point she tried to leave and began to walk away.

“The female continued to make incoherent statements and added that the child’s face had changed,” the affidavit stated.

Lopez was booked into the Hidalgo County Jail, where her bond was set at $5,000.
