For the second time since the June meeting where it began to regroup, Wiscasset’s Future of the Schools Ad Hoc Committee will not meet. School committee training is now set for Aug. 19, when the town-approved, selectmen-appointed ad hoc committee was set to meet after its July meeting was cancelled.

BBHWP: State grant for Working Waterfront Rebuilding and Resiliency awarded
Boothbay Harbor Waterfront Preservation (BBHWP) has received one of the Working Waterfront Resiliency grants awarded by the Department of Marine Resources (DMR), the Department of Transportation (DOT), and the Governor’s Office of Policy Innovation and the Future (GOPIF). This program was created and approved by the state legislature to provide funding to the owners of critical working waterfront infrastructure that provides significant and compelling community benefits. Specifically, these funds were approved for the purpose of rebuilding wharves and piers of importance to Maine’s commercial fishing and aquaculture industries that were damaged in the winter 2024 storms, with the intent of improving their resilience to the impacts of climate change. As stated in the Bangor Daily News, “The properties, spread out along the coast from Kennebunk to Lubec, are considered important pieces of the working waterfront infrastructure.”
Surprise! Wiscasset’s Simmons wins leadership award among Maine town, city, county management peers
Wiscasset Town Manager Dennis Simmons on Wednesday, Aug. 14 won Maine Town, City & County Management Association (MTCMA)’s Leadership Award. In a surprise that town officials worked for weeks to keep from Simmons after Economic Development Director Aaron Chrostowsky got word July 31 of the win, Simmons received the honor at MTCMA’s annual luncheon at Sunday River.
Historic Perkins homestead may join National Park System, boosting preservation efforts

Southport’s Larry Crane pens book about his military service
“At the Mercy of Chance” [Breadalbane Publishing July, 2024] is a memoir that recounts a young man’s journey from humble beginnings in small town Illinois to combat in Vietnam. The author, Larry Crane of Southport, graduated from the United States Military Academy, completed Airborne and Ranger training at Fort Benning, served three years in the infantry in Germany, and commanded a basic training company at Fort Knox before becoming chief advisor to the 23rd Vietnamese Ranger Battalion fighting in the Central Highlands. Crane’s military service is an eye-opening dive into the gritty reality of a junior officer’s active-duty experience overseas and how the sacrifices involved altered his life and his marriage.
