Wahoos Swim Meet Comes Down to the Wire in Alexandria
ALEXANDRIA, VA-The blistering heat wasn’t the only reason fans were sweating at the Old Town Pool as the July 6 Colonial Swim League face-off between Alexandria’s Chinquapin Wahoos and the Chantilly Highland Dolphins was decided by just five points. The nailbiter of a meet came down to the final relay as the Dolphins swam away victorious with a score of 228 to 223.
Stream project in Annandale nears completion
The project to restore the Coons Branch stream in Annandale Community Park is ahead of schedule. Workers have completed stabilizing the stream banks, says project manager Jasdeep Saini, of the Fairfax County Stormwater Planning Division. However, the fence around the project area won’t be removed and the stream won’t be open to the public until late fall.

Takoma Park City TV video photojournalist Bienvenido Martinez won an Emmy Award for his camera work in a documentary about the fentanyl crisis. The documentary Tras la Sombra del Fentanilo was honored at the 66th Annual Capital Emmy Awards (PDF) in the Societal Concerns—Long-Form Content category. Martinez, producer/host Andrea Sarralde, editor Nestor Bravo, and director/producer Eduardo Lopez were honored.
35 displaced after fire at women's shelter
MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. — Beds are covered and plastic and belongings left behind after an emergency exit at Interfaith Works' women's homeless shelter. “Mid-day, Fourth of July, one of our staff members noticed there was a fire," said Courtney Hall, CEO of Interfaith Works. "Apparently there was an electrical issue with one of the exhaust fans. Caught fire, spread in the wall and damaged the kitchen area, the shower area, one of our medical suites as well. The damage is pretty extensive."
Manassas Bee Festival – Thousands Gather to Celebrate Pollinators
June 22 marked the fourth annual Manassas Bee Festival which, despite the record-breaking heat, drew a brightly colored crowd sporting bee antenna head bands and pollinator costumes. The festival celebrated the final day of National Pollinator Week and began with a 2k “Honey Hike” from the Manassas Museum to the festival site of Liberia House and Grounds. Featuring live music by the Stoney Creek Bluegrass Band, dozens of vendors, and a petting zoo, the festival had something for everyone.

The signage has gone up outside and we’ve got an update from the Knead team. They have received all their permits and are aiming for a mid-July opening. That’s in the next couple of weeks.
