WEST HAZLETON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — It’s week four of the 28/22 News Hunger Free Summer Campaign! Heading into Wednesday, we managed to collect more than 8,000 pounds of donated food for families in need.

28/22 News I-Team Reporter Andy Mehalshick and PA live! host Rachel Malak were in West Hazleton helping collect food to combat childhood hunger in northeastern Pennsylvania.

About 10 carts were filled on Wednesday and 28/22 News spoke with Bianilda Lemus with CEO Weinberg Food Bank on how you can help.

You can help in the fight against hunger by paying the Weis Market in West Hazleton a visit and donating cash or non-perishable food items.

Danielle Matarella with Hazleton Catholic Social Services also spoke with Mehalshick about how great the need is for food in Hazleton.

Lindsey Froilan from New Roots, a partner organization with CEO Weinburg Food Bank, explained how their organization can help people recover from substance abuse disorder.

Melissa Eroh with the Willow Foundation/Heartwood Center also talked with Mehalshick about how their organization can help those experiencing food insecurity in Hazleton.

To wrap up the day, Mehalshick spoke with Food Bank Director of CEO Weinberg Mary Ellen Spellman on what all the food donated Wednesday means for people struggling to put food on the table.

Your generous donations will help many families and individuals in our region.

We had another very successful day and we thank all of our viewers who stopped by to donate food.

In the past four weeks, we have collected over 11,000 pounds of food.

Next week, join Anchor Tom Williams, Chief Meteorologist Josh Hodell and PA live! Host Chris Bohinski at the Weis Markets in Clarks Summit.
