1933 – 2023 - Gerda Edwards was born Gerda Gene Gustason in Saco, Montana on July 14, 1933. She died in West Linn, OR, three weeks following her 90th birthday. Her parents, Elsie and George Gustafson were iterant Montana school teachers, moving often to wherever there was a better job. Gerda maintained contact with friends in the many towns where she lived throughout her time in Montana. Lavina had a special place in her heart.

After high school, Gerda wanted to be a journalist, but life had other plans. After some travels, she came to Oregon in 1954. Her speed with a typewriter, her command of the English language, and her enjoyment of writing led her to employment as a legal assistant in the law office of Jim Goodwin. It was a successful and happy career that she followed for 40 years.

While still working, Gerda trained as a massage therapist. After her retirement from law office work, she practiced Swedish Massage for 11 years. She remained a traveler and writer, visiting many countries and states in the USA, making many friends along the way. Gerda carried on mail correspondence with friends in four continents, as well as keeping voluminous journals of her travels. She especially enjoyed Elderhostels and the educational programs they provided.

Gerda was always active and continuously studied educational courses and crafts, along with participating in volunteer activities, and supporting needy children through charities. She had active membership in many organizations – the Clackamas County Historical Society, the Lewis and Clark Heritage Foundation, the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian – to mention a few.

Gerda passed away quietly from a combination of vascular dementia and age-related conditions on August 6, 2023. She wished no ceremonies on her death. Gerda’s ashes will be scattered on the banks of the Musselshell River in Montana.

Gerda is survived by Ted Ehernberger, her partner of 45 years; her sons, Mikel Edwards and Mark Edwards; her granddaughter, Sarah Edwards; and her nephews, David, Tod and Scott Gustafson.

Remembrances may be contributed to Dins (Navajo) College Development Fund in Tsaile Arizona, 86556.
