Happy 100th!
Richard Weaver, born and raised in Bonneauville, turned 100 years old today, July 25. He is the third of 13 children. Weaver enlisted in the Army in 1944 with the 17th Airborne Division known as “The Golden Talons,” receiving his parachute and glider badges. During World War II, he fought in the Battle of the Bulge, where he was wounded, and Operation Varsity, receiving accommodations and medals for his bravery. He returned home to his sweetheart, Jeanne, in 1946. They married soon after, together raising 11 children; they celebrated for 66 years together. Weaver became a master plasterer. In 1978, he was invited to be part of the first class offered by the Diocese of Harrisburg for a lay person to become a deacon. For almost 40 years, Deacon Weaver, as he is known, assisted the priests at St. Joseph the Worker in Bonneauville, as well as going throughout the county, visiting many nursing homes, prisons, shut-ins and hospitals to minister, provided support, communion and comfort. Weaver said he is blessed and honored to have been able to touch so many people’s lives but most importantly how many lives touched him. The family will celebrate his 100th birthday at the Deacon Richard Weaver community center with the mayor and the Borough of Bonneauville presenting him a proclamation noting July 25 as Richard J. Weaver Day. The staff and residents of Transitions Healthcare, where he resides, will spend an afternoon dedicated to him, celebrating this milestone birthday. (Submitted Photo)

First, because the class was new and I didn’t know what to expect, but second, because I knew that in that class, I would have to grapple with my contribution to the racially disproportionate 85% white population of my school.
