Garrett Riley addresses Clemson’s backup quarterback situation
The Clemson football programs have no doubt who their starting quarterback is heading into the 2024 season with Cade Klubnik, but the No. 2 spot on the depth chart has been a competition. Redshirt freshman Christopher Vizzina was a highly touted recruit, but we’ve seen him struggle. Former walk-on Trent Pearman was arguably Clemson’s spring game’s top performer, completing 10-for-13 with 113 yards and a touchdown through the air, as well as a 49-yard touchdown run on a read-option. From what we’ve seen, Pearman has the edge, but we’ve seen very little outside of that spring game. According to Clemson’s offensive coordinator Garrett Riley, both have flashed this spring, with the competition for the No. 2 spot still being fought. “They are still going to have to battle here in fall camp,” Riley said. “Those guys flashed in the spring. Trent had a few less practices due to a little injury there at the beginning of spring. Those guys are going to have to battle through it in fall camp, no question.” It will be interesting to see how this develops as it could go either way.
