WESTBOROUGH A local woman was hospitalized on Friday after she was struck by a SUV while crossing Lyman Street in her wheelchair, police said.

The 58-year-old woman, who has not been identified, was transported to an area hospital with serious head injuries after the 12:45 p.m. incident, Police Lt. Cliff Luce said.

Her condition is not known but her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, the lieutenant added.

The woman was crossing Lyman Street at the busy intersection with Turnpike Road (Route 9). She had just left the Nouria Shell gas station at 128 Turnpike Road when she was struck, Luce said.

The motorist who struck her, a 53-year-old Northbridge woman, was driving a Toyota Rav 4 northbound on Lyman Street. She had a green light when she crashed into the other woman, who was in a manual wheelchair, Luce said.

"She had a red light and it turned green," the lieutenant said of the motorist. "She (the wheelchair user) was not in a crosswalk."

Police did not identify the wheelchair user or the motorist. The motorist was uninjured and remained at the scene.

The crash led to heavy traffic delays. Lyman Street was closed, which impacted both East Main Street (Route 30) and Route 9, Luce said.

The motorist has not been cited but the crash remains under investigation by the Westborough Police Department and the Central Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council.
