Vocal Opposition Continues of Pipeline in Guthrie County

    By Chris Varney,

(Guthrie Center, IA) — The Guthrie County Board of Supervisors had a packed house on Tuesday morning and residents of Guthrie County at times got emotional against the Summit Carbon Solutions Pipeline

The supervisors continued to say that they can do very little to prevent the pipeline from being built. Supervisor Steve Smith suggested that residents contact their Iowa legislators

One of the worries from the Board of Supervisors is being sued — Story and Shelby Counties both attempted to restrict the pipeline and had to go to court where Summit won in federal court. Supervisor Brian Johnson doesn’t want to happen in Guthrie County so he doesn’t expect even passing an ordinance against it

The Supervisors did consider a resolution objected to the Iowa utilities Board’s authority to enact eminent domain authority within Guthrie County but they were not happy with the language in the resolution and tabled it for the next meeting.

Riley Gibson from Summit Carbon Solutions was at the meeting and answered many questions although did not provide answers to the issue of eminent domain or provide a map of the pipeline. He did say that everything is still in the early stages with more public meetings to come

There will be a public meeting in Guthrie County next Tuesday. Gibson did say that construction of the pipeline is not slated to begin until early 2026.
