WESTFIELD, NJ — Sixteen teams of two competed in the town’s first “Beers, Bags and Boards” cornhole tournament at Foundation Park on South Avenue on Saturday, June 29.

The Downtown Westfield Corporation and Lion’s Roar Brewing Company teamed up to put on the day of friendly competition, local beer and live music. Participants had to be 21 years or older to play, but there was no age limit for spectators.

“For our first one, I was very excited with the turnout,” said Maddie Bowen, general manager and events coordinator at Lion’s Roar.

The top team of Louis Hausle and Jim Huber from Scotch Plains won $400 worth of Yiftee gift cards toward purchases in Downtown Westfield. Second, third and fourth place winners in the round-robin style competition got $250, $100 and $50 in Yiftee cards.

Some participants also walked away with swag from Lions Roar and gift cards to Uncle Skippy's Kitchen and Kirshenbaum Baking Co.

A beer tent at the park hosted by Lion’s Roar featured a variety of craft beers, and people were encouraged to bring in food from local restaurants. Some played pick-up games on the boards that were not in use.

Following the tournament, the festivities continued across the street at Lion’s Roar with live music by Outside the Box, a Cranford-based acoustic cover band.

“It definitely felt like a celebration of the wonderful small businesses in Westfield and was a great community event,” Bowen said. “There were families there that were having a blast just watching even if they didn't know anyone competing.”
