WESTFIELD, NJ — A resident of Boynton Avenue reported being defrauded out of about $990 on July 11 in a phone scam, Westfield Police said Wednesday.

“The victim received a notification via the computer as a Microsoft warning that financial information had been compromised,” Sgt. Michael Walsh told TAPinto Westfield.

The victim gave their contact information to the person requesting it, and that person then told the victim to transfer money to them to resolve the issues, Walsh said.

To avoid scams like this one, Walsh suggests looking up the contact information for wherever the caller claims to be from and contacting that company directly.

“Never buy gift cards to pay a company when they make specific requests for said form of payment,” he said.
