Gov. Abbott Announces 7 New State Hospital Projects, Including $1B+ for Two in North Texas
Seven new state hospital projects—including new ones in Wichita Falls and Terrell—have been announced to better serve people in need of inpatient psychiatric services. Gov. Greg Abbott said the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) projects are funded by $1.5 billion approved by the Texas Legislature in 2023 to expand, renovate, and build new facilities across the state.

Texas judge blocks federal rule expanding Title IX protections for LGBTQ+ students statewide
TEXAS, USA — A federal judge last week granted a temporary injunction, blocking expanded Title IX protections for LGBTQ+ students from taking effect in August in Texas. The changes to Title IX, announced by the U.S. Department of Education in April, clarify that it also protects against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Title IX is a law introduced in 1972 that bans discrimination on the basis of sex in education programs or activities receiving federal financial assistance. The expanded protections were set to take effect Aug. 1.

Dallas man kills woman, then himself in apparent murder-suicide
DALLAS, Texas — A man and woman were found dead in a Dallas apartment in what authorities are calling an apparent murder-suicide. On July 15, 2024, at approximately 3:10 p.m., Dallas Fire and Rescue responded to a call for a health and welfare check in the 3400 block of Mahanna Street. The preliminary investigation determined that DFR forced entry into the apartment and found 26-year-old Solmaira Vazquez Castillo in the bathroom with stab wounds.
