Shooting behind KCK fire station leaves one dead, three in custody
KANSAS CITY, Kan. (KCTV) - One man has died as the result of a shooting in a Kansas City, Kansas, park after he was found behind a fire station over the weekend. More than 12,000 students aspiring for careers in healthcare from around the world converged in Houston, Texas on June 26-29 for the HOSA Future Health Professionals International Leadership Conference. Six Great Bend High School students qualified for the international competition, and five students attended. Seniors Eliana Teri and Cailyn Murphy placed eighth out of 88 teams competing in the medical innovation category. Sophomore Cara Murphy was also part of the team but could not attend the international conference.

Lawrence school board to consider approving teacher raises, handbook that bans cell phone usage
Lawrence teachers could receive raises and several staff members stipend increases this fall, based on the tentative contract up for the school board’s approval Monday. Lawrence Education Association, the district’s teachers union, came to an agreement with the district during a negotiations meeting on June 25. The tentative contract for 2024-25 increases the base annual salary by $1,400 for teachers.

Barton Register of Deeds candidates attend League of Women Voters forum
A few political candidates who were invited to attend Thursday's League of Women Voters - Barton County forum at the Great Bend Senior Center were unable to attend in person. That was not the case for the Barton County Register of Deeds office as candidates Glennda French and Susan Williams were both present to answer two questions each.
