Dartmouth implements water safety ‘enhancements’
Following the death of Won Jang ’26 — whose body was found in the Connecticut River on July 7 — the College is reemphasizing its water safety policies. In a joint email to campus sent on July 12, Dartmouth Student Government, Dean of the College Scott Brown and Ledyard Canoe Club sent “important safety reminders” about the use of swimming docks on the Connecticut “in light of the tragic death” of Jang. In addition to sharing swimming and “general waterfront safety” guidelines, the group wrote that there would be “additional signage” by the river as they “continue to discuss these crucial water safety issues.”

Middletown Aims to Break Down Language Barrier in Schools
The Middletown School Committee is tackling the issue of language barriers in its schools. After receiving a $281,500 grant from the van Beuren Charitable Foundation, Asst. Supt. Michelle Fonseca reported to the School Committee on July 18 how the funds are being used to build support for multi-language learning students. She said the focus of the funds will be on building each school’s capacity for MLL students by certifying general education teachers and building out-of- school support and collaboratives. The certification and endorsement include modules and discussion on MLL teaching techniques, as well as the social and cultural aspect of MLL teaching.
