Washington Elementary School in the Westwood Regional School District is getting a fresh coat of paint, new sidewalks and a final asbestos abatement in the building.

The regional school board, which oversees schools in Washington Township and Westwood, approved funding for improvements to the Washington School during its Thursday night meeting. The board approved a $111,250 co-op bid from GL Group to perform the asbestos abatement and awarded a $69,432 co-op contract to Patch Management Inc. to perform sidewalk replacement.

The abatement will be done in the building's pipe chase tunnels −conduits through which water pipes and other infrastructure pass −in the kindergarten-to-second grade section of the building. Timelines for the work weren’t mentioned at the meeting.

The district conducted an emergency, $88,000 asbestos abatement at the school last November as part of repairs to a broken sewer pipe in the pipe chase tunnels near the third to fifth-grade section.

Finishing the second round of abatement will allow Westwood Regional to proceed with upgrades to the school's heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems. Once the pipes in the tunnels can be wrapped in material that doesn’t have asbestos, the district will once again have safe access to the area, School Business Administrator Keith Rosado explained at the meeting.

Other work will replace sidewalks that have become “uneven” near the school's drop-off zone, said Rosado.

The district is also finalizing quotes for updated interior lighting and classroom repairs at Washington Elementary. And the building is scheduled for a new paint job in the coming school year, as the district cycle through a new school each year. Painting will begin in the hallways and proceed to classrooms throughout the school year.
