SCHUYLER COUNTY, N.Y. ( WETM ) — Graduating high school seniors in Schuyler County can now apply for a $1,000 scholarship.

Any graduating students, including homeschoolers, who live in Schuyler County are eligible to apply for one of the Watkins-Montour Rotary Club’s scholarships. Students can apply by asking their guidance counselor for an application or downloading one from the club’s website . Completed applications and accompanying materials are due by May 24.

Students applying for a scholarship will need to describe how some of their life choices have used the Rotary Club’s “Service Above Self” mantra. This mantra asks if actions, thoughts, and words are true, are fair, will build goodwill and better friendships, and will be beneficial to everyone involved. This portion of the application will be weighed most heavily by the scholarship committee, which will be comprised of at least four Watkins-Montour Rotarians.

The application also asks the students to describe their educational goals. Applicants will need to submit their application along with an up-to-date high school transcript, two letters of reference, and a list of their extracurricular, community, church, and/or work activities to one of the addresses given on the application form.

In order to receive the scholarship, students must be willing to attend a regular Watkins-Montour Rotary Club meeting to be recognized by the Rotarians. Scholarships will be awarded at the beginning of the student’s second semester of college after the student submits a first-semester transcript with a minimum GPA of 2.5.

Those who have questions about the scholarship application/process should email Scholarship Committee Chairperson Michelle Benjamin at mbenjamin@empacc.net.
