SOUTHPORT, N.Y. ( WETM ) – Mother’s Day is on Sunday, May 12 and with that, plenty of people will be buying flowers. But, which ones can be harmful to your pets?

“Well, I’ve got two culprits right here in my hands, which are probably the most popular as far as being considered one of the most toxic is the lilies. They really are poisonous and have a real strong poison I guess because they’re listed as one of the most toxic and then you’ve got tulips and daffodils. Really, just about any plant for the most part, you know, can be detrimental to a certain point if enough of it is eaten,” said Co-Owner of Chamberlain Acres Charlie Todd.

Most plants give off a warning sign before being eaten.

“There’s a reason why dogs and cats and animals have lived as long as they have as well as us because there are signs that if something is poisonous usually when you’re eating it or starting to eat it. Whether it’s a milky substance or it’s bitter, most plants actually give out a warning sign of ‘Hey, this might not be a good idea because I taste bad,’” said Todd.

There are also a few pet-safe plants you can buy.

“Istobia is a great flower that is meant for shade and is also considered pet friendly. so, apparently if it’s eaten it’s something that is non-toxic. another one which I was talking about which my bulldog would go right for is echinacea which is coneflower. It’s considered a cold remedy with the herbs, but it is another one that is also considered non-toxic; which is apparent because my bulldog lived for thirteen years,” said Todd.
