CORNING, N.Y. ( WETM ) — The Corning Salvation Army reached a milestone in celebrating 140 years of service to families throughout Steuben County. A picnic took place at the Nasser Civic Center to support the organization with raffle baskets and desserts made from Beartown Road Alliance Church.

Major Anita Stewart said the Corning Salvation Army began in 1884 and has been at its current location on Denison Parkway in Corning since 1964. According to Stewart, the previous locations were at the Radisson Hotel and on Market Street. She attributes the organization’s continuous presence in the community to the support and contributions from local residents.

“The Salvation Army is existing in over 150 countries around the world. We happen to be one of the locations here in the eastern territory of the Salvation Army, and we’re excited that we’ve been going on for all these years because of people in the community who have supported us financially, who have come to programs and events that we have had, and we celebrate the people in the community of Corning,” said Stewart.

In addition, Stewart says the kettle kickoff for this Christmas season will be at the Corning Country Club with the Elmira Salvation Army. A date is in the works to be scheduled.
