TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A man was convicted of killing his girlfriend in front of a toddler in 2020 and then leaving the child alone with the body at the Manatee County home, according to the 12th Judicial Circuit State Attorney’s Office.

Orestes Figueredo-Ortega was convicted by a jury on a charge of murder in the second degree with a weapon.

Figueredo-Ortega was dating Delmy Teyul and on Sept. 17, 2020, he didn’t go in to work because he wanted to see what she was doing while he was supposed to be working, officials said.

After an argument, Figueredo-Ortega tried to strangle Teyul and then stabbed her three times in front of a toddler, according to officials. Teyul died from a stab wound to her heart and left lung.

Figueredo-Ortega left the toddler alone with Teyul’s body and drove to Miami, where he was later arrested.

At the time of the murder, Figueredo-Ortega was on pretrial release on a charge of domestic battery by strangulation involving the same woman, and was ordered to have no contact with her, according to officials. He was also on felony probation out of the Miami area.

“We are pleased with the jury’s verdict holding the defendant responsible for his brutal and fatal attack on this victim,” Assistant State Attorney Charlie Lawrence said in a statement. “Domestic violence is a prevalent issue in our community, and this case is a heart-breaking example of the problem.”

    Lawrence called Teyul’s death “senseless.”

A sentencing date for Figueredo-Ortega has not yet been scheduled. He faces up to life in prison.
