    Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections Secretary Jimmy LeBlanc resigns

    BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — After serving as secretary for the past 16 years for the Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections, Jimmy LeBlanc announced his resignation on Friday, Aug. 23.

    LeBlanc worked for the Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections for more than 50 years. He was appointed to the cabinet position by then-Gov. Bobby Jindal in January 2008, according to the Louisiana Correctional Association .

    LeBlanc was reappointed in 2016 and 2020 by then-Gov. John Bel Edwards. According to the Louisiana Correctional Association, he was also appointed in 2016 to serve as the Chair of the Louisiana Justice Reinvestment Task Force.

    He began his career in corrections in 1973 at the Louisiana Correctional Institute for Women after he enlisted in the United States Army and served during the Vietnam War, according to the Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections .

    Gov. Jeff Landry released a statement in regard to LeBlanc’s resignation.

    “I would like to commend Secretary LeBlanc for his long and distinguished service to our great state. As the Secretary of the Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections for over 16 years, his dedication has been unmatched. We wish him and his family the best as he continues his over 51 years of public service. Over the next few weeks, appointing a new secretary to this position will be our top priority.”
