TPSO Investigates threat made toward Ponchatoula High

PONCHATOULA, La. ( WGNO ) — The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office, in cooperation with the Tangipahoa Parish School System, is investigating a threat that was made toward Ponchatoula High on Wednesday, Aug. 28.

According to the TPSO, a call, which made vague threats about a shooting at the school, came in to an area law enforcement agency around lunchtime.

The TPSO immediately responded to the call and was assisted by the Ponchatoula Police and Fire Departments, Hammond police, the Southeastern Louisiana University Police’s bomb-detection k-9 team, U.S. Customs’ helicopter for air support and Acadian Ambulance for potential medical emergencies. Additionally, the TPSO Student Resource Officer who was assigned to Ponchatoula High was also on scene when the call came in.

The teams secured the campus and cleared all aspects of the response plan for this type of threat within two and a half hours, and reportedly confirmed that there was never an imminent threat on school grounds. All students and classes were safe and continued learning during that time.

The incident is still under investigation, and the TPSO, along with the Tangipahoa Parish School System, insists that, “any threats will be taken seriously and those responsible for disrupting our community and our children’s learning will be held accountable.”
