A new veggie-forward restaurant is under development in Birmingham. Birmingham’s planning commission reported Bloom at 239 N Old Woodward to be under construction in its Aug. 24 meeting. The project originally received site plan approval in July 2021.

Bloom is anticipated to fill the former Pita Cafe space once relevant renovations are complete with plans to activate front and back exteriors, bringing outdoor dining to Willits Alley.

Bloom will become Birmingham’s first fully plant-based bistro, citing that “the heavy presence of gyms, athletic stores and health food markets in Birmingham prove that the city is ready for more health-conscious establishments” in its design narrative.

The restaurant is owned by Winta Tedla , an accomplished businesswoman and philanthropist and the brainchild of established chef Matthew Kenney , who owns various vegan concerts internationally and domestically. The restaurant features a seasonally changing menu under Kenney’s consultation that is executed by award-winning chefs Nina Paletta and Megan Shaw . The menu translates many crowd favorite dishes into plant-based delicacies and will be accompanied by an organic wine and craft cocktail program.

The management group stated in the application that “Bloom is on the cutting edge for bringing sustainability and wellness to the local community, along with providing a social atmosphere for both locals and visitors. “

What Now Detroit reached out to Tedla for comments on the reasons behind the major delay but hadn’t heard back by the time of this coverage.
