Hinsdale pool a pretty cool place to be
By mid-afternoon Tuesday, it was hard to believe rainy, gloomy weather had caused the Hinsdale Community Pool to close earlier that day. The sun was shining from a brilliant blue sky adorned with fluffy white clouds. The crowd might have been smaller than usual, but there are still plenty of patrons - adults swimming laps, playing with their kids in the water or reading a book in the shade of one of the large umbrellas. Two-year-old Millie Jane Muskievicz was participating enthusiastically in her private swim lesson with instructor Finn Hamman, a rising junior at Hinsdale Central.

Ain’t Misbehavin’ hits its stride at Drury Lane
When Thomas Wright “Fats” Waller died at 39 of pneumonia on December 15, 1943, while riding a train from LA to Chicago, he left behind a legacy as a popular singer, composer, and performing artist few have equalled. His formidable body of work includes 400 songs. The range of this music was remarkable; he could be silly (“Your Feet’s Too Big”), sexy (“Squeeze Me”), and sweet (“Honeysuckle Rose”), and still find room on his palette for sad, soulful, social commentary, as in “(What Did I Do to Be So) Black and Blue.” His tunes remain current and are still recorded by other artists, eighty years plus after his death. And his musical innovations, notably the Harlem Stride style, changed jazz.

Ask an expert - KATHARINE ANDREW, ARCHIVIST
The Fourth of July became a federal holiday in 1870, just a few years before Hinsdale's incorporation. Soon residents of the nascent village were staging their own festivities, like the 1875 celebration that "started at 5 a.m. with the booming of a cannon, no one tells who owned it or where it was located, and it was fired intermittently until 9 a.m. that morning," according to preserved records.
