On July 4th, 2024, local artist Marie Roth gave an informative program complete with examples of her original barn wood flags, created from reclaimed pieces of historic barns in Lake and McHenry counties. The presentation was preceded by a delightful performance of patriotic songs by the Deer Park Village chorus, a first-ever performance for this newly established group. Marie Roth shared the stories behind some of the various versions of “Old Glory” that have flown over our country throughout the years. Marie Borg, formerly of Long Grove and now living at Deer Park Village, helped bring this community connection together.

The North Shore Mosquito Abatement District has found the first West Nile virus positive mosquitoes to occur in our traps in Morton Grove and Northbrook this year. Batches of mosquitoes collected June 28, 2024, from NSMAD traps in Morton Grove and Northbrook tested positive for West Nile virus in our lab on July 2.
Illinois quick hits: Group sues Northwestern for discrimination
A lawsuit is accusing Northwestern University’s Law School of discriminating against white men. The federal complaint was filed by the group, “Faculty, Alumni and Students Opposed to Racial Preferences.” The suit claims the school violated anti-discrimination laws by hiring women and people of color over white men with more qualified credentials.
Here in Evanston: Never the same parade
Before there was the Juneteenth parade, Evanston’s main observance of independence was the Fourth of July parade on Central Street. After 50 years of being an exclusively North Evanston institution, in 1973 Celebration Manager Garth J. Conley Jr. encouraged all civic, social and religious organizations to enter the parade. The day’s events would be characterized as the “Evanston 4th of July Celebration,” not the “North Evanston 4th of July Celebration.”
Southtown Summer Fest returns to Oak Park July 13
