Hazmat crews spent over five hours on scene after a chemical reaction was reported at a manufacturing facility in Miami County.

Crews were first called out to Abbott Nutrition on Abbott Park Way in Tipp City around 9:40 a.m. on reports of a hydrogen peroxide reaction in a 300-gallon tote, according to Tipp City Chief of Emergency Services Cameron Haller.

“We filled it up last night,” a 911 caller told dispatchers. “Today we noticed that it’s starting to build pressure and it’s starting to steam.”

As reported on News Center 7 at 5:00 , when crews got to the scene, they found a “chemical storage tote surrounded by 6 other chemical storage totes fuming gases into the air.”

The area was then evacuated and an isolation zone was established.

“The incident occurred near the area of construction at the site. No property damage occurred during this incident. The chemical was released into an approved containment vessel on site,” Haller said.

Images from Sky7 showed first responders hosing down people in what appear to be hazmat suits at one point during their response.

No injuries or illnesses were reported by the plant or emergency personnel.

News Center 7 reached out to Abbott about the situation. A spokesperson released the following statement:

“A minor incident occurred outside our facility today in a loading area. No employees were injured. We’re following our procedures and are working with local responders.”

The cause of the chemical reaction is under investigation.
