State patrol explains what led up to police chase, SWAT standoff ending in Miamisburg

A 32-year-old man is in custody after a multi-county police chase and SWAT standoff on Friday.

As reported on News Center 7 at 11:00 , the Ohio State Highway Patrol identified Johnathon E. Brown, of Hamilton, as the suspect.

Around noon, several southwestern Ohio law enforcement agencies and state patrol were advised to look out for a stolen Chevrolet Silverado that was involved in an incident in Butler Township, according to a spokesperson from OSHP.

Additional information on the specific incident was not immediately available.

Two hours later, a Franklin Police Department officer located the truck and tried to stop it on I-75 SB near Franklin Lebanon Road. Brown took off and a pursuit began.

Troopers joined the pursuit near SR-63 and SR-4 in Monroe. The spokesperson said stop sticks were used, but Brown continued driving on the truck’s rims for several miles.

The chase ended on W. Linden Avenue near N. Riverview Avenue in Miamisburg after Brown drove into the side of a CSX train.

The impact pushed the truck off the south side of the roadway, the spokesperson said.

Brown refused to exit the truck and a SWAT standoff began.

Lynn Harrington lives in Washington Township but was picking up food in Miamisburg when she saw the large police presence.

“I think I counted about eight police cars or more, and then the fire engines and ambulance and it’s kind of scary, especially in a small town like this,” Washington said.

“A policeman came and he was hollering at people. So, we just started walking down this way, because you could tell he wanted people off that walkway,” she continued.

Brown was taken into custody around 6:30 p.m. and was transported to Miami Valley Hospital with minor injuries.

Hunter Bond, a Miamisburg teen, captured a video of the truck driving into the train.

“I heard the tires squealing. It kept going and then the train was coming and I saw him hit the train and spun the truck around,” Bond said.

After the crash, Bond said he heard police come over the loudspeaker.

“I heard the cops yelling commands at him to get out of the car and put the gun down,” Bond said.

On scene, Miamisburg Police Department Lieutenant Will Ring told News Center 7, “It is my understanding that he could be armed, possibly armed. That’s why we’re taking the precautions that we are taking.”

Brown is facing preliminary charges of failure to comply with the order or signal of a police officer and receiving stolen property.

The spokesperson said numerous law enforcement agencies assisted OSHP in this incident, including the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Kettering Police Department, Miamisburg Police Department, and more.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol will continue to investigate this incident.
