As reported on News Center 7 at 5, a truck hit him but he survived.

Police and medic units were called to the highway just before 11 a.m. after a crash involving a pedestrian was reported.

Patrick Jacobs spends a lot of time on the highway, commuting from Springfield to Columbus for work.

“I’ve seen the stuff that’s kind of scary,” Jacobs said.

Ohio State Highway Patrol said a woman driving was concerned about her husband in the passenger seat.

“We had an individual that was suffering from some mental health issues,” Lt. Dallas Root with OSP said.

Troopers said the woman felt like she had to pull over to try and get control of her husband.

That’s when troopers said the man got out of the car, and darted into traffic on purpose, right into the path of a commercial truck.

“He seen the individual run out into the roadway in front of him, and he was trying to avoid him, but the individual was, determined to get into his path one way or another,” Root said.

Medics took that man to the hospital with serious injuries, but he is expected to survive.

The truck driver was not hurt.

Root said many mental health resources are available for people to take advantage of.

“If you are experiencing mental health issues, please utilize those resources. It’s just not fair to the public. If you want to cause harm to yourself, don’t involve other innocent individuals,” Root said.

The man was taken to the hospital for an emergency mental evaluation.

Troopers said they cited him for being a pedestrian in the roadway.

We will continue to follow this story.
