Post Malone might have a new record days away from being released, but he is using his time on stage to pay tribute to the greats before him.

Over the weekend, Malone hit the stage at Outside Lands Music Festival in California. While the festival featured a wide array of genres, country music was the star of the show. From Sturgill Simpson’s return to the stage, Kacey Musgraves stepping out with Sabrina Carpenter to Post Malone’s set filled with the classic songs that helped define the genre, it was a weekend filled with stellar music.

Post Malone’s set was a shining moment from the weekend. He ditched the songs from his rap and R&B catalog and laid down an hour-long set of steel guitar-soaked country. Surprisingly, he did not give fans a sneak peek at what’s in store for his forthcoming project, F-1 Trillion, instead playing cover after cover.

Opening the set with Hank Williams Jr.’s “A Country Boy Can Survive,” with a cigarette in hand, he sets the vibe that his set will feature some of the genre’s most legendary songs. After the opening track, he takes a second to address the crowd, letting them know if they want to hear “Go Flex,” that is not the set they are about to hear.

“My name is Austin Richard Post. I’ve come today…I’ve been invited by Outside Lands to play a set of some of my favorite songs. So we are going to have some fun and f**k around… I wanted to say thank you for coming out and hanging out.”

We knew that Post Malone had good taste in country music based on his covers of “I’m Gonna Miss Her” and “You Can Have The Crown,” not to mention his countless appearances on stage with country music icons over the last year. But, this set further solidifies that he has TASTE.

After addressing the crowd, he fires up Alan Jackson’s “Who’s Cheatin’ Who,” then moves into “Carrying Your Love With Me” from The King. Keeping it within George Strait’s catalog, he pulls out “The Fireman” next.

Post Malone loves a good guest appearance and surprised the crowd with David Lee Murphy singing his ’90s hit “Dust On The Bottle.”

Malone then moves into some music from today’s artists, pulling out Tyler Childers and Luke Combs, but keeps most of the songs in the setlist from the genre’s pioneers. Before closing out his set with Toby Keith’s “Courtesy Of The Red, White And Blue (The Angry American),” he gave fans one of his songs, performing his hit “I Had Some Help.”

From start to finish, this whole set deserves a chef’s kiss. I am dang excited to see what’s in store for his country album come Friday, but I could also sit and listen to Post Malone sing covers all day long.
