Robert Griffin III at least has a good sense of humor about all of this.

In case you missed it, the former standout football player and longtime media correspondent for ESPN was shockingly let go from the “Worldwide Leader in Sports” earlier today. RG3 reportedly had two years left on his contract with the network, but after being bumped off of the Monday Night Football Crew by Jason Kelce, it appears that ESPN didn’t have a good enough reason to keep him on their staff.

It was first reported by The Athletic that both Griffin and and Sam Ponder, who was also a part of MNF coverage, were let go by ESPN due to budgetary constraints:

Besides the budgetary explanation, there’s not a lot of information or obvious reasoning for ESPN to let Robert Griffin III go. Some are point fingers towards some recent negative comments that RG3 made about longtime ESPN personality Paul Finebaum. Others are citing that Griffin was quick to defend Imane Khelif, the controversial boxer that won gold at the Paris Olympics.

Did you ask what the meme-sters online were saying about Robert Griffin getting the boot? Thanks goodness you asked, because they are all linking it back to an absolutely absurd picture that RG3 posted of he and his wife eating a croissant. Jokesters on social media are saying that photo was the final straw for ESPN:

And they aren’t the only ones that have jokes about Robert Griffin III losing his job. The best meme about ESPN giving RG3 the axe came from… Griffin himself. The media personality borrowed a clip from the hit 1995 movie Friday and shared it online (with no caption). It apparently suggests that RG3 had the day off when he was fired, and it perfectly encapsulates and self-deprecates the moment:

Here’s to hoping RG3 lands on his feet with another job sooner rather than later…
