Dudes will see this and say, "Hell Yeah" "What the hell?" This is one of those random sports facts/statistics that seems too weird to be true. But I can assure you that NFL legend Terry Bradshaw's football greatness was only able to get started because Duck Dynasty' s Phil Robertson decided to hang up his cleats. Sounds crazy, but it's true. Phil Robertson was the starting quarterback at Louisiana Tech from 1965 to 1967. Terry Bradshaw was also at Louisiana Tech during that time, from 1966 to 1969, and only started as the team's quarterback in his last two college seasons. Because Robertson was that good... even though he would have rather been hunting than hurling the pigskin. Bradshaw sat down with Joe Buck in a 2017 episode of his
Undeniable series and Bradshaw's back up years came up, and Terry explained how maddening it was to sit behind someone that didn't care to really play, yet had effortless, next-level talent: "On game day, it was like he was mad we had to play a game cause the ducks were flying high or the deer were (moving). It was crazy... he was the starter. I couldn't beat this guy out." Anytime Bradshaw has talked about being a backup in college, he's always praised Robertson's abilities - even saying he had a release that was quicker than the great Joe Namath. And though he apparently didn't care a lick about playing football, he was damn good at it, as Bradshaw went on explain:
"He was good. He played Alabama the year they won the national title. We played them in Birmingham and he lit them up." At the beginning of Bradshaw's junior year, Robertson up and quit the team, leaving Terry to be the starter. That ultimately worked out really well for Bradshaw, who was a college All-American that season, which led him to get drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers (first overall), who he went on to win four Super Bowls with in his 14-year NFL career. And he only got his chance to shine at Louisiana Tech because the patriarch of Duck Dynasty loved hunting too much to play football. Phil Robertson has famously said that his last conversation with Bradshaw before he quit went something like this: "I said, 'Bradshaw, here's the deal. You're a big strong kid, you've got a strong arm and you want to play in the NFL and you want to play football. He said, 'That's right.'
I said, 'I'm going after the ducks full time. I'd rather hunt ducks than have large violent men stomp me in the dirt . . . You go for it and I'll see you later." And it seems as though everything worked out really well for both parties: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mSxT57kOM5w
