ANTIGO — Langlade County Judge John Rhode accepted a plea agreement Tuesday from a White Lake man who hit and killed another driver while intoxicated in June of 2022.

Cory Hansen, 32, was convicted of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle and hit and run resulting in death after pleading no contest to the charges. Three other charges, including first degree reckless homicide, were dropped as part of the deal.

On June 29, 2022, according to a criminal complaint, Langlade County sheriff’s deputies were called to Wilson School Road in the town of Evergreen by residents who heard a loud bang and then observed an object on fire in the road. A deputy discovered a moped burned to the frame, and, a few yards east, a deceased male with severe head trauma.

Another deputy followed a trail of fluid that led from the roadway down a driveway, where Hansen then approached him with his hands up and admitted he had just collided with something and had recently used marijuana, alcohol, and cocaine. The defendant later became less cooperative, however, refusing to take a breathalyzer test and even threatening to kill deputies who had taken him into custody.

A Wisconsin state trooper who analyzed the crash scene concluded that Hansen had struck the victim head-on while traveling westbound on the eastbound side of the road.

Rhode noted that the intoxicated vehicular homicide count mandates offenders serve a minimum of five years in confinement, and that the hit and run charge has no mandatory minimum. Twenty-seven years is the maximum for each charge.

A pre-sentence investigation, a detailed investigation of Hansen’s life, will be conducted prior to his sentencing date, which is set for May 17.
