A councilman for the resort-town posted on social media , Timothy Loehmann resigned from the position Monday, July 1.
Timothy Loehmann is sworn in as the Tioga Borough police officer on July 5, 2022
Councilman Ryan Lockhart said Loehmann had been employed and working for the city for “some time” before he and other’s learned about the officer’s past.
Rice was killed outside the Cudell Recreation Center on the city’s west side on Nov. 22, 2014.
Police were called for a report of a man with a gun. Police said Officer Loehmann opened fire when he said the boy reached towards his waistband. The gun turned out to be an airsoft pistol.
Loehmann was never charged for firing the deadly shot that killed Rice, but he was fired from the Cleveland police department for lying on his application. The city said he did not fully disclose his employment history.
Tamir Rice would have turned 20 years old on June 25, 2022.
“This is a small resort community nestled in Appalachia, we’ve never been faced with such a controversial occurrence and unfortunately did not have the proper operating procedures in place to verify something like this couldn’t happen, we’ve certainly learned from it, and I want to make sure in the future that policies are implemented within our city to verify something like this can never happen again,” wrote Lockhart.
“Every time Loehmann resurfaces in his game of bad-cop whack-a-mole, he torments the family of Tamir Rice. Why can’t he just go away and live the rest of his life—life he deprived Tamir of—in humility? Why does he insist on being a cop? It seems pathological at this point. “
The FOX 8 I-Team texted Loehmann to ask about the job but have not heard back.
